EPASSA Statement on Constitutional Court Ruling - Corporal Punishment

September 19, 2019

EPASSA welcomes the unanimous judgment handed down by the Constitutional Court today which upheld a 2017 high court ruling which made it illegal for parents to hit their children at home, dismissing an appeal to the ruling and effectively making corporal punishment in private homes unlawful. EPASSA affirms and supports the Court's finding that "children may still be effectively disciplined without resorting to chastisement" (hitting). We call on our membership to do as much they can to psycho-educate the public about the negative psychological effects of all forms of violence against children, including corporal punishment.
