Submission regarding the Scope of Practice for Psychologists

January 30, 2019

On 12 September 2018, notice was given that the Minister of Health, on the recommendation of the Health Professions Council of South Africa and the Professional Board for Psychology, intends promulgating new regulations defining the Scope of the Profession of Psychology. The Educational Psychology Association of South Africa (EPASSA), the South African School Psychologists Association (SASPA) and the Society for Educational Psychology of South Africa (SEPSA–a division of PsySSA) believe that the proposed Scope of Practice if implemented will have the unintended consequence of causing harm to our profession and to members of the public who use our services. Please find our submission to the Minister and our alternative recommendations.

EPASSA challenges all organizations, universities and stakeholders that made recommendations on the Scope of Practice to be transparent and to share on open websites the submissions that they made to the Professional Board for Psychology and/or to the Minister of Health. We believe that this will serve the interests of their members, students and the public.
